Well, antenna is extremely important in AM system. While
you can get away with a short piece of wire at least to get
some basic range in a FM VHF system, this isn't so simple
on mediumwave AM band.

1m of wire will get you virtually zero range. Grounding system
and soil conductivity becomes more important, too.

Why is that so? Wavelength of mediumwave signals is much
much longer than those of FM broadcast band. 3m at 100MHz
and 300m at 1000KHz.

What can you do? Choose frequency which is as high as possible,
for example 1610KHz.
Antenna will have to be a very long piece of wire, extended between
trees and similar high objects.
